Thanks so much for this story and for putting the mp3s on your site Mark. I remember living in Thames in 1995 or 6 when Deane's version of Satellite Spies did a gig. My mate went to it and said it rocked. I could hear it from across Main St and it sounded shit - I remember being really dissapointed - now I know why it sucked. I had the LP - would gladly pay money for the CD today - or a digital download in iTunes Canada (where I now live) - that album was the soundtrack to my late teen years. Thanks again for the music and the memories Mark.

I loved Satellite Spies and I bought the Destiny in Motion LP. Years later I was passing through Whakatane and saw a sign promoting "Satellite Spies" playing at the local that night. My friend and I decided to stick around and catch the act for nostalgia's sake. We were puzzled and disappointed all evening because all they played were pretty average covers, until right near the end they played Destiny in Motion. Now it makes sense.

It's worth reading up on the original members of the Little River Band's quandary over not being able to use the name "Little River Band".

When the last original member, Glenn Shorrock, left the band in the '90s he sold the name to guitarist Stephen Housden (who had joined the Farnham-fronted line-up in the '80s).

When Shorrock, Birtles and Goble (the songwriters and voices of the band's heyday) reunited earlier this decade, they weren't allowed to use "Little River Band" or "LRB". In fact, Housden nearly halted their induction into the Australian industry's hall of fame as "Little River Band" -- they had to be referred to as "original members of Little River Band", or some nonsense.

Now there's an LRB covers band constantly touring the States as Little River Band, while when a band called Birtles Shorrock Goble rocks up for a show, no-one is aware of who they are.

I understand Mark never sold the name, but perhaps he was a bit careless in not acting on the trademark issue when he was first made aware of it.

PS: 'Destiny in Motion' conjures up great memories of my high school days. I have it on my iPod.

My ISP iServe ( http://www.iserve.co.nz ) yesterday received one of Deane's "legal" emails, demanding they close down the satellitespies.net.nz website. iServe made the effort to ask questions, refer the issue to me and to not do the knee-jerk reaction of closing down the site. Kudos (and thanks) to iServe.

yeah, it's a sub-Andrew Ridgley role, to be sure.

In other news, I LOVE pre-ironic rock. Touch of the Psychedelic Furs, or Mr Mister reimagined for club-gigs not stadiums. Good work, men with mullets :)

If you can handle another sitting of the song, nothing lays out the hierarchy of the band quite like the televised <a href="http://www.metacafe.com/watch/2898070/satellite_spies_destiny_in_motion_live_on_tvnz/" rel="nofollow">live version</a>.
